What is a Brazilian wax treatment?
A Brazilian wax treatment is a procedure performed by an esthetician to remove all of the hair from the genital area for women. A Brazilian wax is not the same as a bikini wax, although the two can occasionally get mixed up. A bikini wax removes the hair along the groin line that would be visible while wearing a bikini bottom, whereas the Brazilian wax goes beyond that line and removes all of it. Some women may choose to leave a small patch of hair but typically the hair is completely removed from the sensitive skin in the vaginal area and the anus. Deciding whether or not to get a Brazilian wax is entirely a personal choice and many women choose to do it instead of shaving as the results last longer and the hair grows back finer and softer. Hair that is waxed regularly can also grow sparser with repeated treatments. Brazilian wax treatments use a heated wax that is spread over the hair of the treated area, then covered with a strip of cloth. Once the wax has adhered to the cloth, the esthetician will quickly pull the cloth, removing the wax and hair with it. This process is repeated until all of the hair in the area has been removed.
How long does a Brazilian wax last?
Everyone’s hair grows at different rates so each individual will have different results. The area being treated can also have an impact on how long it takes for the hair to grow back. In most cases, a Brazilian wax will last between 3 and 6 weeks. The hair will start growing back within a week or two of your treatment, with the hair becoming increasingly visible around 3 to 4 weeks. Hair needs to be at least a quarter of an inch in order for the wax to be able to grasp it, so the time between waxing appointments will be dependent on how fast your hair grows and how long it takes for the hair to get back to at leas that quarter of an inch length.
What not to do after waxing?
While the purpose of waxing is to remove hair from the body at the root, it does also remove a bit of the protective top layer of skin in the process. Because of this, you will need to be protective of the skin in the freshly waxed area. Avoid tanning either in the direct sun or in a tanning bed for at least a few days after your treatment as the skin will be more sensitive and can get burned easily. Ingrown hairs may form after waxing and should not be picked at as it can lead to infection. Any type of body spray or deodorant should be avoided as the chemicals can irritate the skin and cause ingrown hairs. Avoiding tight clothing, exercise and saunas are also suggested as the sweat can cause bumps or redness, as well as irritate the already sensitive skin. Swimming in a pool can dry out the skin due to the chemicals, while swimming at a beach can expose your raw skin to bacteria, so both should be avoided.
What are the benefits of Brazilian waxing?
Waxing does have many benefits, despite the discomfort of it. Waxing leaves the skin feeling soft and smooth as it helps to exfoliate the skin as well as remove hair. Results from waxing last significantly longer than shaving does, without the risk of cuts or razor burn which can be painful and awkward, particularly in the genital region. Brazilian waxing can remove all of the hairs from hard to reach places that a razor can’t reach, ensuring the area is left smooth and hair free with minimal irritation. Like other forms of waxing, Brazilian waxing causes the hair to grow back softer and finer, especially if done on a regular basis. It can also start to grow thinner with repeated treatments.
